Janamaithri Suraksha Project
Janamaithri Suraksha Project seeks the responsible participation of the citizens in crime prevention at the level of the local community, conserving the resources, both of the community and of the police, in fighting against crimes which threaten the security of the community. Experience shows that by seeking the active co-operation of the public in performance of police duties, the process of Law Enforcement becomes far more effective.
Kannur City District JanamaithriSuraksha Project is functioning under the control of District Police Chief. Deputy Superintendent of Police, District Crime Branch is the District Nodal Officer of the JanamaithrySuraksha Project.
 

Janamaithry Suraksha Samithis
For monitoring the functioning of Janamaithry Project, Janamaithry Suraksha Samithies are functioning in every Janamaithry Police Stations and these Samithies are endeavored to undertake and implement JanamaithrySuraksha Projects within the limits of respective Police Station. Inspector of Police of the respective Police Station is the Secretary of these samithis and meeting of the SurakshaSamithis are being conducted at least once in every month. Each Samithisconsists of 10 to 25 members. While constituting the Samithis, High School Head Masters, College Principals, teachers, retired officers, ex-servicemen, corporation councilors/ward members, merchants, NGOs, workers&rsquo representatives, residents&rsquo association office bearers, postmen, KurumbaSree office bearers etc. are considering for members and there will be proportionate representation from among women and scheduled caste and tribes. Respectable citizens from the locality, who are active in the educational and cultural field are also considering for the members of these committees. Janamaithry Suraksha Samithis are reconstituting in every two years and District Police Chief has the right to remove any member of the committee who involve himself in any crime case or action involving moral turpitude.
Depends on the local need, the following types of projects are generally implemented by the JanamaithrySurakshaSamithis,

  a) Night patrolling with public co-operation
  b) Coordinating with private security guards
  c) Knowing new residents and strangers
  d) Fitting Burglar Alarm and security systems
  e) Helping senior citizens and physically challenged citizens
  f) Protection of women and children
  g) Awareness programmes
  h) Traffic Warden systems
  i) Organising counseling centres to resolve family discords, drinking habits etc
  j) Monitoring maintenance of street lights, traffic lights etc.
  k) Implementation of projects encouraging blood donation, eye donation, organ donation etc.
  l) Organising self defense courses
  m) School based safety and vigilance programmes
  n) Cooperating with Kudumbasree units
  o) Preventing illicit sale of liquor and drugs
  p) Monitoring illegal financial institutions
  q) Complaint Card systems
  r) Disaster Management and Mitigation
  s) Trauma, Rescue and First Air Projects,
  t) Victim Support Cells.

Janamaithry Beats
A local area which includes around 500 houses is considered as a Janamaithry Beat Unit and the entire Police Station jurisdiction is thus divided into as many Janamaithry Beats as required. Each Beat area is not exceeded 3 Square Kms. One Assistant Sub Inspector of Police/Senior Civil Police Officer designated as Beat Officer is holding the charge of each Beat and whenever possible, a Woman Police Officer is also deputing for assisting the Beat Officer. Serving of summons, execution of warrants, locating the addresses, handling the complaint box and all other duties to be performed by the police in the area are being coordinated and done by the Beat Officer, subject to the supervision by the Station House Officer. The name and identity of the Beat Officer in-charge is exhibited at important places in the respective Beat Areas.
